3M Patents
Background
Soon after completing my undergraduate degree, I worked at 3M Company, where I gained industrial experience testing, developing, and designing components for manufacturing abrasive products. During my eight months at 3M, I had two main projects.
Projects description
My primary responsibility was investigating novel manufacturing and design methods for cut-off wheels. To that end, I designed a device to mechanically place abrasive grits in cut-off wheels, leading to a patent.
Another team project I participated in included researching 3D Printing to produce abrasives. I investigated various printer settings, abrasive materials, and shapes to help realize this project.
Reflection
These projects further exposed us to the importance of manufacturing knowledge for product design. By investigating new production methods, we were able to achieve novel abrasive products.
While working at 3M, I learned to work in an open-ended, research-focused workplace. I felt alive in this fulfilling work environment where I could work creatively and manage my own time in the company of a diverse team.
